30 Seconds to Mars' "Up in the Air" - Single Review

American rock band 30 Seconds to Mars, led by the gorgeously talented actor Jared Leto, has been churning out music since 2002, making a name for themselves in 2005 with the release of "The Kill" and its accompanying hit album. Since then, the band has still been going on strong, breaking world records and writing new music, with each album achieving a higher peak position on the Billboard 200 than their last, but "The Kill" still remains their most successful, and my personal favorite single to date. With a fourth studio album on the horizon, currently set for a May 21 release, the band is hoping to have another Hot 100 smash with with the recent release of Love, Lust, Faith + Dreams' lead single "Up in the Air", which literally had its premiere up in space, aboard the International Space Station.  The new single marks their first since 2010's Kanye West-assisted "Hurricane" which failed to make the splash they were hoping for.

"Up in the Air" opens with the band's traditional rock-n-roll sound, but accompanied this time around with synthesizers and more of an uptempo, techno-inspired beat than we are used to hearing from the group. I'm sure some fans were thrown off. The song is no "From Yesterday" or "Attack", it represents a desire to change things up a bit. The band is still present, more alter and willing to give their fans something new and different. Leto's vocals are as powerful as they have been since the band's debut, it still surprises me every time a new song is released. With a message of a lost love they wish to get back, Leto screams "up in the air, f***ed up our life, all of the laws I broke and loves that I sacrificed". I'm sure he gets his point across.

While the singer may feel this is the end of his life in terms of love and desire, there is still some hope left in his voice. He is still chasing dreams as the song comes off as an anthem of strength and perseverance. There are so many emotions thrown into the four and a half minute track and all of them are able to come through. The sound the band is showcasing now is new enough to keep building a larger audience, but still representative of who they have always been in order to not ostracize the loyalty with their current admirers. The production is a good listen, the lyrics seem heartfelt and personal as always, and the vocals create a nice lead single. "Up in the Air" has pleased me as a fan of 10 years and certainly built up the buzz and excitement I was expecting. Good job guys!
