THE BEAUTY SPOT : Gluten in cosmetics? How dangerous is it?

I wrote a few days ago about living with coeliac disease and the difference it has made to my life.  I was surprised when the topic of Gluten in cosmetics came up at work. I hadn't given it a moment of thought.

I know there are some coeliacs who are a lot more 'serious' about it then others. I know some who will not eat off the same chopping board or use the same knives. I am a bit more relaxed about that but I keep forgetting there are a lot of different ways to consume/absorb gluten.

I have to say that besides warning us to be careful with cosmetics - and telling us that there are companies out there who provide gluten free alternatives to big brand name cosmetics - without naming any of these companies - information is a bit sketchy at best.

Although another article did state that Bare Minerals is a great brand to try for gluten free alternatives.

Here is a list of what to look out for :

You would be surprised where these products show up. You can find wheat produce in lipstick, lip gloss, moisturizer, some mascaras and even nail lacquer.

Also be careful with these products :

Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour
Cyclodextrin
Dextrin
Dextrin Palmitate
Hydrolyzed Malt Extract
Hydrolyzed Oat Flour
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
Hydrolyzed Wheat Flour
Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten
Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein
Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein/PVP Crosspolymer
Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch
Malt Extract
Maltodextrin
Secale Cereale (Rye) Seed Flour
Sodium C8-16 Isoalkylsuccinyl Wheat Protein Sulfonate
Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Extract
Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil
Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Gluten
Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Starch
Wheat Amino Acids
Wheat Germ Glycerides
Wheat Germamidopropalkonium Chloride
Wheat Protein
Wheatgermamidopropyl Ethyldimonium Ethosulfate
Yeast Extract

And Soybean as well since soy has been added to moisturizers lately and we can't eat soy.

It seems that for every coeliac that claims to have had a reaction to cosmetics - another claims that they are fine. I think it comes down to how particular you want to be when it comes to choosing your cosmetics.  I will update this post if I receive any more information!!!
